Alan MacInnis - Alienated in Vancouver

About

Cass King and the Cassettes’ lineup is chock-full of Vancouver music scene veterans. The main songwriters - lead vocalist Cass King and guitarist John Woods - have performed since 2001 as cabaret duo the Wet Spots, and traces of that act’s racy humour can still be heard in Cassettes tracks like “Window Shopping”. Drummer Adrian Buckley is a veteran of the Tomorrows and the Orchid Highway, and currently hits the skins with Star Collector. Bassist Brendan Mooney has been a member of The Paperboys, the Town Pants and Edmonton Block Heater, and is a highly sought-after session player.

“Naked on the Dance Floor” channels the sounds of R&B – informed British postpunk legends like early Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, as well as American garage rock stalwarts like the Mooney Suzuki and the Detroit Cobras. The lead single “Nice Guy” is a contemporary, #metoo era examination of the darker side of those classic, yearning 60s soul tracks where the singer just knows the girl is destined to be his, even if she doesn’t. "Naked" is chock a block with edgy, danceable Motown-inspired shakers, with a couple of smooth ballads thrown in for make-out purposes.
